X308s don’t have panic buttons, they have headlight buttons. There is a way to activate the alarm by pressing the headlight button three times in quick succession, but the only way to find this out is either by reading the manual or, in my case, being a child who is easily amused by remote controlled headlights.

This is a good thing, because the XJ8 has an alarm so blood curdling that it will liquefy your brain.

Additional neat piece of trivia: The Tibbe keys were only used in Jags, the Merkur Scorpio (I think they originated with the Scorpio, actually), and Transit vans. Because of the key and lock construction, any Tibbe key can be used to lock any Tibbe lock, but not unlock it.

It’s a blast to drive. At 290 bhp and a 6.5ish second 0–60, the N/As aren’t really fast by modern standards, but they’re still a lot faster than anyone ever expects. It also handles better than any car that size has any right to. There’s a bit of body roll on curves, but it almost instantaneously flattens out.

Is the headlight button a European thing?

I always wondered why my Volvo had it but not any of my families other cars. It’s very useful.

Yeah I’ve found my ‘40 to be far more capable than a 1.8ton barge has any right to be :) mine’s a little slower than yours as it’s only the old I6. I’d love a V8 for it TBH, but they’re a little tricky to hook up to a manual ‘box without standalone engine management so it’s a bit of a pipe dream at the moment...

Haha, no it’s actually a 5-speed from factory! They stopped doing manuals when they swapped over to V8s.

Funny story I was actually swapping a 5-speed into an earlier XJ40 I bought for £60 when a tree fell on it, so I thought ‘sod it’ and just bought this one outright :) I must say, I can see why they appeal as cars with auto boxes as the 5-speed cuts a little into the ‘effortless’ feel they have, but it’s just not my cup of tea ;)

I think you might be able to get 5-speed swaps for V8s from TheDrivenMan if memory serves me right, although they might just be for V12s (and not exactly cheap either way!)
